Tick Borne Encephalitis
What?
Tick Borne Encephalitis (TBE) is a Flaviviridae infection (like Yellow Fever, Dengue and Japanese Encephalitis).
How it is caught?
TBE is spread from mammals to humans through the bit of an infected Ixodes tick.
What does it do?
The first stage of the illness causes flu-like symptoms (fever, headache and muscle pains). Some patients then progress onto the second stage where they develop an infection of the brain and surrounding tissue.
Can it be treated?
No
Where is it?
TBE is distributed in a band from central Europe through to the Eastern coast of Russia.
